Bastille on Market Day

It is pleasant enough inside Bastille Café at lunch, but the real action is happening under the sun out in the street along Ballard Avenue. Buskers are busking, neighbors are chatting, and vendors are offering beautiful local veggies, fruits, cheeses, fish, poultry, and meats, beverages, art, and an atmosphere that draws hundreds of folks to leisurely stroll the Sunday Farmers Market.

Bike In the Window

A lot of Seattlites cycle around for pleasure and to commute, despite our killer hills and sometimes very wet weather. Here's one Capitol Hill apartment dweller's resourceful use of space for keeping the bike stowed when not out on the street. Bike as decor, it's an urban aesthetic :-). Would your partner/roommate/family members complain if you stole this living room window storage idea? :-).

Before the New Buildings Went Up

This lot across from Kerry Park Overlook sat vacant for many years. They have just finished the very attractive buildings and I walked by them last night and thought of this shot, a view I'll not see again. Someone must have sprinkled wildflower seeds about and so bright poppies and bachelor buttons adorned the wild green space. You may recognize the rest of the view :-). I'll try to show you what's there now later this week. It is Memorial Day in the USA, a national holiday in which the fallen in war are remembered. Yesterday was Decoration Day when families and organizations decorate the graves with flowers, wreaths, flags and tears.

Seen At the Ballard Farmers Market

I was at the always colorful and festive Sunday Ballard Farmers Market when I spied these two very well behaved pooches eying the meat at a vendor's stall. You can't blame them for wagging their tails and looking on longingly as their owner made a purchase.

Coming around the bend of Alaskan Way where it intersects SAM's Olympic Sculpture Park I saw two people silhouetted against the backdrop of a sunset sky. The colorful glass bridge installation just to their right is called Seattle Cloud Cover, a work by the very beautiful sculptor Teresita Fernandez.

It was a cold, gray day at Deception Pass, but this couple seemed to be making their own kind of sunshine as they walked together above the emerald waters surging below.

You be the screenwriter. What would the dialog be in this scene? Submit a scrip of 10 lines or less :-). I know how creative many of you can be. Have fun with it. :-)

These two characters were on the beach at Ocean Shores on the Olympic Peninsula today where my daughter (our guest photographer) found them in deep discussion. :-)

This cyclist was enjoying the scenery at quite a good pace along a winding road near Deception Pass, despite the weight of his gear. Would you feel comfortable riding that narrow ribbon of the shoulder's edge when larger vehicles pass next to you?

Need a Place To Store Yourself?

The Belltown neighborhood can accommodate you :-). This very contemporary sign with a "Frasier-like" outline of the Seattle skyline is posted on a 1920's era building facade. I thought it pumped up the gray scene well with a bit of vivid neon.

Sea Lions left a few things behind (shells and a sea star) after dining at the Coupeville dock. Gulls came along and picked things rather clean.

Looking east from Penn Cove on Whidbey Island, reflection and reflected merge into one blue gray world. We've been having a fantastic sunny spring in these parts, but still have our clouded moments.

Every year the Ballard neighborhood gears up for the biggest Syttende Mai parade outside of Norway. This Seattle neighborhood that has deep Nordic roots pulls out all the stops for this fun community event, much enjoyed by young and old alike. The parade route is always crowded with thousands of onlookers who come out to celebrate. Today many City Daily Photo Blogs are also honoring Norwegian Constitution Day, so visit around and check out a celebration gone global :-).
