Seattle's Museum of History and Industry holds many interesting treasures, and I'm a sucker for textile arts. This finely coiffed lady wears an exquisite and elaborately hand embroidered kimono gifted to Seattle from her sister city of Kobe, Japan. You can see the back of the kimono here photographed by Brad Mohr. I thought the manikin herself was also interesting and beautiful.
Absolutely exquisite! Wouldn't it be fun to wear that kimono?

ReplyDeleteShe does portray an idealized Japanese beauty. It's otherworldly to walk the back streets of Kyoto and see the geishas and maiko dressed like this.

Bob, I always think of this look as a historical throwback, like the dolls in the glass cases relatives who traveled to Japan brought me when I was a child. Hard to believe one could encounter live humans made up this way today except for theater or touristic consumption. The manikin is exceptionally well crafted--I couldn't get over the realistic eyelashes.
