Market Pig

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

Rachel is the giant bronze piggy bank at Pike Place Market (just in front of the popular fish tossers' market under the clock). You can see some of her hoof prints embedded in the pavement, engraved with donor's names. The Market Foundation collects $6000 to $9000 in change and bills each year, which it distributes to recipients of its health, education, housing and social welfare programs, and the farmers emergency relief fund. During the floods of last November, many market farmers' crops were wiped out. Contributions on line to the fund are much appreciated (click on the link then click on the Donation Form link in left column. To celebrate the Market's 100th anniversary this year, artists will be adorning replica's of the pig for display all over town, some with video screens. Watch for Pigs on Parade 2007!
