Hope. . .

Hope

. . .That's what the front of her sweatshirt said in big white letters. This is a Seattle woman I saw roller blading on a Greenlake path in the late afternoon winter sun. She might be a member of a religious sect or order, or she might dress according to customs from another region of the world or just be doing her own thing. Nice to see her out and active.

Maybe it is a political statement with the two choices among the Democrats, either of which would offer some hope.

What a FANTASTIC photo - real integrstion of two cultures.

Agree with Abe - let's HOPE it will be sorted soon too, which is necessary cos McCain is ahead of both at the moment.

I saw the picture and the first thought which comes to me was...she's frum...an Orthodox Jew.

Great chance that she is. I used to be one, religious that is.

Ola kim, thank you for visiting blog, suppose you have already visited Lisbon because you know well of what I was talking about the light.
You have a sensational blog and this picture in particulary is very original.
I "hope" that you win the tournament because your pictures are much better than those of the competitor. I mean that by heart :)

Hi Kim,

Thanks so much for your nice comments on my photo. That was pretty much my first real attempt at any serious long exposure photography and I think I still have a ways to go. I think what I want to do next is do a similar shot from that same location but do it in the middle of the night and do about a 20 minute exposure. That view is looking straight north, so I'm hoping the north star will be in there somewhere and I'll have some nice star trails. I'll definitely post it once i get a good one. Good luck with your long exposure stuff. Its pretty fun once you get going with it. take care.

By the way, I have to tell you that the composition in your photography is exceptional. Is that a natural ability or do you have to work at it? Unfortunately I dont have too many natural abilities in general (ha ha) so I really have to work at my composition to get it right. Anyway, great work, I really enjoy it.

It really is lovely to see - last time I saw anybody on roller-skates was a year and a half ago in Russia.

Hope is such a positive thing to have. Great photo.

Abe, You may be right about that.

Zsolt, (Big blush) thanks!

Sally, Thank you! Gosh, what you've heard in Australia is different than we are hearing here re. candidates' standing in the polls.

Ineke & David, Thank you so much for your very kind comments.

Midas, That hadn't occurred to me. When I glanced her coming toward me my first thought was of Mennonite women I'm familiar seeing; but, after two seconds of registration, I knew her apparel didn't fit that description.

Uma, No, I've yet to visit Lisbon, but I love seeing photos of it in our CDPB family. And, thank you for your kind comments. The other blog in the tournament with me this week is not a photoblog, but a news blog for a large neighborhood here in seattle. Their photos are to illustrate their news stories and they aren't attempting to do what we photobloggers are aiming for. It's a really great blog, and of very high quality (but, vote for SDP anyway, okay :-) ) Thanks!

Dustin, I'll look forward to seeing more of your experiments. And thank you for your kind comment about composition. I think I've picked up ideas about composition from art and design classes in another medium and just transferred it over to photography. When I'm shooting, though, especially action shots or candids of people, it is split second decisions about what seems appealing at the time. I seldom think "rule of thirds" as I'm looking through the view finder. I learn a lot from other's photos that draw me in for a long look. If you analyze what about a photo makes it appealing to you, you begin to notice things you like and to try them.

Maya, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Gerald, Thanks! It's a popular form of exercise here, and I guess all around the globe. You lucky to be doing a bit of traveling!

Casdok, Thanks! There are so many dinks of all kinds in daily life, without hope we would probably just shut down and give up. I'm for hope! And joy.

Nice to meet you.

Well, all you kind people that popped over from Dave's blog, thank you so much. It felt like a fun surprise party! Glad to make all of your acquaintances and have spent some pleasant moments exploring most of your blogs. No need to ever knock 3 times ;^), and Cath, her wardrobe suggested American or European roots to me, but then I had the advantage of seeing her coming and going.

Thanks very much for your kind comments.

Great photo! My guess is this gal might very well be a young nun who has had a couple articles written about her - the habit looks similar and she's a local high school volleyball coach, which would make sense seeing as this lady's obviously athletic.

Janelle, Thank you so much for the links. The face of the young woman in the photos of these articles does not remind me of the face of this skater. Perhaps it is one of her nun acolytes from the community she is part of. The habit is the same, so that's what I would gather. So now we know the wearer of "Hope" is a nun in habit.
