Needling Around

Needling Around

From iconic symbol of a space age world's fair to 46 years a dominant structure on the skyline, Seattle's Space Needle is an inescapable (and marketable) image, here rendered in metal, pasta, paper, and porcelain. You'll even find it in ice sculptures, blown glass, and seemingly etched in the psyche as the trademark of the city by the Sound. Do you have an example lying around your house somewhere?

I remember when this was built and at the time it was marketed on everything and written about a lot. I thought it would not survive as it seemed way too top heavy.

There was a World' Trade Fair there not long afterwards and I did some designs for the NCR Corporation that represented their card reader and tape reader machines that were shown at the fair. The theme was the Space Needle.

I love pictures of the Seattle skyline because of the space needle. I do like the space noodle though. I never noticed before, but is the elevator on the outside?

A much more iconic sort of architecture than the more modern stuff, like say, the Sears Tower in Chicago. You don't see too many tchochkes of that. What is the Space Needle considered, Googie?

I know this Needle through your blog and...Grey's Anatomy!

Oh, goodness! There really are Space Noodles!!!!! When we took our four year old grndson sightseeing in Seattle last month, one of the things he really wanted to do was "go up in the Space Noodle." Please, where can you buy them?

I have to get some of those space noodles next time I'm in Seattle. They make me laugh and my grandsons would love them too.

It’s interesting that so many of us from all over have memories of this magnificent building. I have been up to the top many times and have eaten in the restaurant too. I can also say I worked for the company that at one time did the repair work on the machinery that makes the restaurant revolve. I think I even made some of the repair parts; but that was many years ago and I don’t recall for sure.

Space Noodles! How great are those?

My grandparents lived by the Space Needle when I was a little kid and they're still the first ones I think of when I see SN imagery.

Thanks for jogging some happy memories.

Space noodles! rotfl! I've been to the rotating restaurant a few times, but didn't get any space noodles. I have some 62 worlds fair souvenirs that I found at flea markets that all have the Space Needle on them. Nice choice of examples in your photo.

I love the collection of photos in this shot.

I don't know why or how, but even in Canada I have always knowen about the space needle.

Most likley due to film, as it's been in a number of them.
