To The Summit

Photo & Text Copyright 2008 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

This photo may not immediately give away my whereabouts on Sunday, and that's because I spent the day enjoying a grand tour with a fellow CDPBlogger who took me to places frequented mostly by locals. The city is beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada where I was attending a lecture and benefit concert Saturday at the University of Victoria concerning forging an end to child soldiering around the globe. I had a wonderful time discovering much more of Victoria on Sunday with Benjamin Madison, whose Victoria Daily Photo I have greatly enjoyed for quite some time. It is so fun to not only go visiting favorite photo haunts of someone whose work and writing I admire, but to discover through conversation a depth and breadth of life experience and common threads of interest and influence that seem uncanny. Thanks again, Benjamin! I took this shot at Mount Douglas, a small peak that gives a grand overlook of Victoria and the southern portion of the island and beyond. The young girl scrambling to the summit spoke to me of freedom and positive movement and the joy of life.

Kim, that's a beautiful photo. Excellent use of pastel colors, contrast.

Darn! I was sure you'd gone to Portland to see Meead!

Beautiful image! I've included your blog in a recent posting about "20 Awesome Photoblogs - Seattle". Check it out when you have a moment. Best of luck and keep up the great work!

Interesting photo. I like this up the mountain type of photos especially when there are lots of crags and rocks at extreme angle.

Tks for commenting on my spider. These are truly magnifcent beasts and I'm glad to hear you are hosting a couple of its cousins.

It's found a good source of food where it is and has toughed out some severe wind and rain recently.

It has rebuilt and reoriented the web a couple of times. I greet it daily!

Oh, I'm so glad you went to Victoria! Everything about Benjamin's blog tells me both the city and the blogger would be a privilege to see and meet.

What Elaine said.

A beautiful shot, too. It has everything it needs echoed in coat, hilltop, movement and clouds. Lovely.

Thanks Kim for your kind words and for giving me the opportunity to meet you and share with you a little of what I love about Victoria. If this splendid photo were the only outcome of our meeting I would be amply rewarded for what was both a privilege and a pleasure.

Elaine - seems to me there is a plan afoot for us west coast bloggers to meet up at some point. I hope so!

I hope so too!

Nice to know where you are and love the photograph. The enthusiasm and energy of the girl is so evident. Makes me tired tho to look as one feels as if she's climbed miles and reached the summit! The way her clothes blow in the wind - great. You are so right, it does indeed show her joy of life.

Thank you one and all! I will post some other shots from Victoria on my Flickr page this weekend (I hope. . .) and you can see some of the places Benjamin showed me. Better yet, go to Victoria Daily Photo and spend some time in the archives.

And US Elaine, we were both saying while out hiking how much we loved you and your witty, often hilarious comments, and hoped to meet you; and, how we West Coasties in the CDPBloggers seem to be thick as thieves along the North American West Coast, with big pockets in AK/BC/Pacific Northwest, NorCal, and SoCali.

A superb shot. I think I have been up that hill. My son and his wife are U Vic grads. So, we use to spend time exploring Victoria when visiting our son.

I really like the uncertainty of this photo. Is she running in fear? Is she upset and needing a quiet place to be alone with her thoughts? Is she joyful? Is she giddy and excited and racing her dad to the top? Is she just trying to keep up her momentum and reach her goal?

What is going through her mind?

A smashing photo, Kim! Dynamic, haunting and peaceful at once. Great that you had a chance to visit with Benjamin. He has been one of my very favorite CDP bloggers since we both started some six months ago. Hope to have the chance to meet you both in the future.
