A man smoking outside Seattle City Hall and an interesting alignment of building elements caught my eye. Are you a fan of contemporary architecture, or do your tastes run more toward the aesthetics of other eras? Has your city or state or country banned smoking indoors? It was always a shock to the eyes and nose when we traveled from our home in San Francisco where smoking indoors had been banned since the 80s and arrived at destinations where it was not. That has slowly changed. Even Paris has adopted a restaurant smoking ban now. Smoking in office buildings was banned in Seattle long ago, but a Washington ordinance banning smoking in restaurants and bars only took effect here in 2006. Seattle smokers seem to have adjusted to the restrictions despite the inconvenience of having to brave the elements for a smoke break outdoors in the harsher months.

There's an easy way to fix the problem of inconvenience: Don't smoke.
And as for the photo, I love the many straight lines evident in this shot. It caught my attention right away.
It's been a few years since I travelled in the sticks but I was surprised then that restaurants were filled with smokers or still had smoking and non-smoking areas. I don't know if that has changed since my last trip. Smoking isn't even permitted in bus shelters in Vancouver (a new by-law).
Some Canadian cities I'm familiar with don't permit smoking within a minimum of 3 metres (9 feet) of a doorway.
Seattle has some impressive modern architecture. I tend to take it on a case by case basis.
I really like the colors and the lines on this photo. And I like no smoking just as much!

The lines in this are fascinating. The echo of the man's physique in the benches, the curious reflections in the central pane. Excellent shot.
Kim, This is masterful composition. Most of us would have cropped the top and it has so much more impact with all that space at top. I've learned a good lesson from you today (as always)!

Good eye for the details, and the composition. In the (still) cold Northeast, I chuckle whenever I see smokers huddled outside in doorways puffing away.
I just learned today that cigarettes in Massachusetts cost $8.90 per pack, so if they can afford to be so foolish, they can afford to be cold.
Nice shot. Real simple yet there's a lot going on. I keep wishing to see his reflection in the window but the shot is still awesome!
