Life on the Corner

Life on the Corner

Photo & Text Copyright 2009 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

The corner of 4th Avenue and University in downtown Seattle was humming with conversations, private thoughts, people crossing the street and traffic waiting for the light, all captured in an instant by the shutter. The building in the background to the left is the Seattle Tower, and behind it is a glimmer of the windows of the WaMu Tower. The building that houses the Capitol restaurant is the Cobb building, which I will show you more of soon.

Ah, nice one! It's not always easy to use tilt-shift with relevance, but you made it happen here :)

I agree with Jerome. The effect of the sharp focus on the street scene helps us "see" humans in their environment with a heightened awareness. This image and the way you've presented it gives us much to think about.

What a neat shot. Instead of fade out it is fade in. MB

This is a great photo. It's a perfect Seattle street corner shot. I really do love your city. I enjoy it every time I visit, though I haven't been able to wander around downtown for quite some time. What kind of food does the Capital have?

Love the way you draw our eye to the lower part of the photograph. It is SO effective.

Thanks so much for your comments on Menton, Kim. It was such fun to have all the bloggers here, and to see Menton through their eyes. And now, later, to see their photographs. I find it amazing how differently yet fabulously everyone photographed life here.

and re the drinks, we all tasted each kir. We just needed you with us to complete the tasting - plus lemoncello, of course!

Ahhh Kim, when I get home from France I think my next trip needs to be to the NW so I can follow you around. I'm thinking I can learn a lot from you . This one is just so great and not a shot I would think to take. Maybe our friend will join us! Now that would be some big fun! :)

Oh, how exactly did you do this? Lens? Something else? I'm very curious. It's a lovely effect.

You transform this corner in a beautiful and magic spot of this wonderful world!

Thank you kindly everyone! Shawn of Slightly North shared with me a fun and extremely simple to use site that simulates some aspects of a tilt-shift lens. http://tiltshiftmaker.com is your friend ;^) .

This is so cool. It reminds me of a diorama with matchbox cars and little plastic people. It's definitely the fade that makes it appear so. It actually made me think of the old series from the 60s, Davey and Goliath.

excellent technique and eye to create this photo. I agree with Antjas that it definitely reminds me of matchbox life

I've been trying to use this effect for a while, but they never came out as nice as I want them to be. Please check out my recent post on the results.

Such a cool shot. Love how you've used the contrast of blur and focus.

Awesome shot - love how most of the photo is blurry and the people crossing the street and the cars are in focus. Very cool looking.
