Just off Roosevelt in the Maple Leaf neighborhood you can take a half block stroll and get a graphic novel's worth of Seattle's heritage. I have always intended to stop as I've driven past this mural, and I finally did. Seattle's history and industry from 1850s European-American settlement through about the 1970s is depicted in this huge heritage mural best visible from the QFC market parking lot across the street. Don't worry, there is no quiz, but what parts might you recognize or know the stories behind? It was painted by artist and prolific muralist Larry Kangas, with lettering by Julie King and surface prep by Claude Beal. Painted sometime in the 1990s, it is aging gracefully. Close ups of sections are at my More Seattle Stuff site. Each vignette is very special in and of itself. There has been an update at some point, as the artist's photo shows different scenes on the extreme right end. The top of the Space Needle replaces a replicated World's Fair brochure, and Jimi Hendrix has been added at the edge.

I love the way you've composed this, Kim. With a sense of the street in front of the mural, you convey the sense of the passage of time distilled in the mural.
I didn't even know that was there. We're going to have to check that out next time we're in Seattle. Good subject.

Hilda, this artist specializes in outdoor murals. Perhaps he would like to go to Manila :-). Your beauty in the islands there is so different than here, and your history much more colorful and LONG!

Greg, sorry that I haven't been able to keep up with visiting around as much as I have in the past and that I would like to now. I missed seeing your announcement of vacation plans. I think it is more than safe to assume that all of us CDPBloggers would love to get together for coffee and such when we visit each other's cities. I'm so glad you had a great holiday here in the States and I loved seeing all the shots you posted of your adventures. If I get to France in October, as I hope to, you just might find me in your neck of the woods inquiring about your recommendation on a local Belgian beer to try!
