I came across some students at the University of Washington enjoying a game of chess on the lawn during spring break. One of the guys was coaching the other about the directions and spaces a rook could move, which led me to believe that one of them was new to the game. Some grass blades and flower petals had been strewn onto the board and the grouping of friends were seated like figures in a painting that might hang in the Musée d'Orsay.

Ah, this series of photos makes me wistful. Beautifully captured, Kim.
super shots, Kim. Very college-ish. My grandson is going to Eastern (freshman) and he enjoys it so. MB
Thanks for the visit and comments.
Very fine, Kim! A most enjoyable image!
Nice collage Kim!
Lovely images.
This is great Kim. It's great you got in close for these shots. They came out great.
I love the grass and petals strewn over the chess board ~ how beautiful!!
Great smiles - these two are obviously enjoying themselves !
The various views are all worth showing - I would have had difficulty picking which one to post. Glad you published them all!
I love the photo essay; you really captured the atmosphere and emotion of the scene well! Reminds me of college :)
Thank you very much for your kind comments. Abe, my daughter learned to play chess at sports camp one summer when she was about 9. Then when she was in 7th grade her school offered a class that we took together. She stopped playing with me when I started winning. . .I'm completely addicted and love chess now and am waiting for the day she will want to play again. Meanwhile. . .the little Shredder app on the iPhone is my current partner :-).
So fun, I know these kids!
Thanks for the Seattle photos - they make me nostalgic in the best way possible.
