Theme Day: Wood

Theme Day: Wood

This is the Evergreen State, and you are going to find endless possibilities for a "Wood" theme day around here. I'm having a little fun letting the Space Needle provide a mid-century modern "hat" for this 30 foot cedar totem pole on the campus of Seattle Center. At it's base is a Keet (Orca), and above it a Raven, then a Bear with a Salmon, and a Hawk keeping watch over all at the top. It was carved by master carvers Earl Muldoe, Victor Mowatt, and Duane Pasco in the 'Ksan style (the Gitxsan people of the Upper Skeena River area of British Columbia).
Wood is our first of the month CDPB theme today, click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

  1. This is great. Very clever. I wonder how many times people have walked past this place without noticing this juxtaposition. Being a Daily Photo blogger does make one more observant of the city around you.

  6. Who wooda thunk! The Space Needle made of wood is a clever idea, Kim. Very nicely done!! This could become a theme of its own ... odd and clever Needle juxtapositions ... remember the Needle as Christmas Tree I did last December? I think we're on to book material, don't you?

  9. Hahaha! And I thought someone just had fun carving a totem with the Space Needle top! :)

I love that you explained the animals carved on the totem. I'm not used to the style yet and would never have guessed what they were. Thank you. I love this!

  14. What a clever one you are! A brilliant post for Theme Day - no, for any day! I love the way the trees seem to lean in and frame, almost protect, the totem pole.

  15. Ha! Very clever! And why didn't the original Space Needle buildings think of that to tie in the NW with the Fair??
