Tooling Leather

For the past few years in the US, low rise jeans have been a popular fashion staple for women. Hand in hand with this trend has been a revival of oldschool wide leather belts. I came across a business that began during the first wave of this fashion and is still going strong over thirty years later. This craftsperson is hard at work in the Marakesh leather arts shop at the Market. She is petite but can muscle around the presses and tools of her trade. It was good to see her interact directly with people for whom she had just customized items. Pike Place Market turned 100 years old on August 17 and supports a very vibrant part of Seattle daily life.
