This week I had occasion to go to Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill. It is a large and beautiful treasure which includes a formidable old world glass plant conservatory, the Asian Art Museum, lovely grounds for strolling, and a large round tower. As I was looking at the view, a woman climbed into the "Black Sun" sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (or as Soundgarden titled this inspiration on their song "Black Hole Sun") to see what the view of the reservoir and Space Needle might look like. Don't let the sunshine fool you; the reservoir she's peering into was partially frozen and gulls were walking and sliding on the ice!

I didn't realize that this sculpture was the inspiration for the Soundgarden tune! I love this weather. Clear and crisp. The sun coming up behind the Cascades during my morning drive to Port Townsend just sets the day off. Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier has been visible from the Olympic Peninsula the entire week. Change is coming later today but that's ok too. I like the rain and snow as well. Change is why I live here.
That "large round tower" is (or at least was) a water tower.

Ben, Thanks. I've yet to go up in it, but I've seen photos taken from up there by some of my Flickr friends, and it's something I have to do soon.

Gerald, I see people do this all the time with this particular work and have never seen an attendant ask them to get off or seen any signs. . .I do notice skate board clips along the bench it rest upon, though. . .so some things are prohibited. Thanks for stopping by!
