Happy first day of summer to you. The sun's warmth is a welcome presence after a fairly dreary spring. I shot this close up of colorful Madrona tree bark yesterday evening during a walk along the Magnolia bluff above Elliott Bay.

That is true 'beauty bark'. I was in Coupeville the other day and there are so many Madrona tree there--very beautiful. Captain Whidbey Inn is made entirely of Madrona wood. Very twisted. MB
hmm... wonder if I passed you on my scooter last night? I was over on the bluff for a ride. Madrona trees are fascinating.

Very nice image - it's one of those 'what is this?' images that is fun to guess at if you aren't told what it is - but the mind plays the guessing game anyway!

I genuinely thought this was A painting in the portal and had to take a closer look. This is fascinating, I really need to find out more about this tree. The colours are fascinating and your image of it eye popping. Excellent shot.

Chuck, My daughter has a lot of friends over your way, so I'm often dropping her off. There was a guy on a red scooter with a side car in front of us at one intersection and I thought of you, but figured it wasn't you, but someone from this family I've seen around town a bit the past few years (and photographed once). I would have noticed if you'd gone by while I was walking as I've always got my eye out for runners, cyclists and scooter riders for interesting subject matter. This time I was absorbed with birds and plants/trees, though. Hope you had a nice ride. It was certainly a great day for it.

Tash & Louis La Vecha, I'm not fond of hot, hot, hot summer weather, so I feel for you both, and have lived in both places. There was a reason I became a life guard in my youth in SoCali. Staying poolside helped beat the heat. You couldn't pay me enough to move back there. And Louis, I SOOO know what you mean by waiting for the air conditioning. The only thing I like about hot summer days are the warm summer nights, and night blooming jasmine and walks on the beach! :-)

Babooshka, These trees are amazing. Some are more subdued than others in their intense coloring, and others look like this when the sunset light hits them.

I had never seen or heard of this tree before. I wonder how that happened? I looked in my tree books and all my trees are from the "Eastern" United States. It isn't in there. Duh?
It is quite extraordinary and I am on another blog showing a young man with furniture made out of the same wood. Wow. What an experience this day has turned into.
