Pillars of Strength

Middle of the night view under Hwy 99 in Fremont. The structure looked so massive. This is looking down Troll Avenue N., and is the view this fellow (that I showed you in 2006) takes in while waiting to nab another unsuspecting snack or two from above.

It is massive. Do earthquakes ever damage it?

I love the undersides of bridges. this is a great shot.

The unusual angle the lens gives makes the poor old bridge look like it's leaning...or maybe it is, and that's how the troll gets his snacks! Nothing like a crunchy VW (with delicate passengers) like the one he's holding! :>)

Hey, how come the undersides of our elevated highways don't look this good?! ;)

Lovely, soft colors in this photo.

A great shot I loved it. Is it really called Troll avenue N. Or is that what the locals call it. Either way I love the name.

It feels so solid and weirded out by, I suspect, a long nighttime exposure. And the Troll is staring at your back! I'd be shaking.

The slight tilt to the photo makes it really an interesting perspective. I've enjoyed the recent bright colors and getting to know the good coffee/meeting places around town.

Nice (twist) on the troll, Kim! Don't think I've ever looked away from him to see what he faced (besides me and others) :)

Abe, I've not heard anything about earthquakes and this bridge. . .they aren't as frequent up here as they are in CA. I bet the highway & transportation folks check every bridge and overpass regularly. One of the footings of University Bridge across the water from this almost washed out a few years ago, but not due to quake related problems.

Thanks BrattCat.

Bibi, can't you just hear him say, (like the old Gary Larson cartoon),"man, I just love this kind with the soft creamy centers!"

Thank you dear Hilda, Breadcrumb, and Kate!

Postie, You can see it for yourself on Google Maps (although the satellite view shows the bridge surface/Hwy 99). This street under the bridge is really named Troll Ave N. on all the street signs and maps. I don't know when it was dubbed that, but probably sometime in the 1990s.

Bob, the Troll only gives me the creeps when someone decides to darken his facial hair to give a Chaplinesque "Little Tramp" look to the 'stash, and then he looks EXACTLY like Hitler. Very scary. . .and you know the giant Stalin resides right down the road from this guy, so it can be an exercise in getting the willies just driving through Fremont!

Tash, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the series.

RAF, I guess with overphotographed novelty landmarks like him, I'm always trying to see what else is there in plain sight if I'll just look.

Thanks for visiting and commenting everyone!

Marvellous lighting and peachy tinge. It is so imposing form the low angle.

Pretty good job of making the highway seen from below look beautiful!

Kim, great photo! I remember the first time I stumbled upon the troll under this bridge. The lighting was about the same that evening as it is in your picture. I love it when a photo evokes a memory.
