Tangled Up In Pink

Tangled Up In Pink

I was taking candids of people downtown as they headed home from work. The fine weather has everyone wearing sunglasses. Scarves are a big fashion accessory for spring and summer this year. This woman's earphone wire was twisted up in her bright pink scarf. Steffe from Haninge Daily Photo in Sweden does lots of street shots like this and, unlike me, often introduces himself to his subjects and learns their names and a little something about them. Steffe saw this uploaded on my Flickr page and quipped: "Soon to be Pretty in Pink." Great one, Steffe!

Great candid shot. I have a hard time taking pictures of people--too private I suppose. I love her dress and shoes. MB

Pretty in PINK indeed! Lovely legs, summer sandals, smart dress, nice photo! Wednesday's "Seattle Skyline" was great, too! Regards from EAGAN in friendly Minnesota.

I'm also shy about asking questions of my subjects. This is such an interesting shot. It's deceptively simple but really there's so much going on.

I hate it when my earphones get tangled in my scarves.

Well, I don't know if the laws are the same in Sweden, but here in France you have to ask someone's permission to put their photo in a public place like a blog. Which is why there are so few people on mine. Enough about that, this is a lovely, summer shot, such great colours! Have a great weekend!

Great shot of her untangling her earphones from the pink scarf. If this had been me I would have ran up without pause to see who she was and talk with her as I'm not so shy. I think it's nice to meet new people. Have a great day.

Excellent shot. I agree, there is much to look at here. As far as approaching people, I kind of judge on a person by person basis. If they look friendly then why not?

Just to clarify, the whole point of candids is to not interject oneself into the scene, to record life as it's happening. I would never feature something unflattering to someone or to put them in a bad light or to make fun of them. I just love people, think highly of them, and their actions in the street are so interesting and tell a story about life here in Seattle (which until yesterday was sunny and HOT! :-) ). I am not shy and often do speak with people before or after I take a photo, but those are generally when I'm in close proximity. I was 1/4 block away for this shot.

I also wonder how so many of our French blogging friends feature candids and street shots if there is such a law binding ordinary citizens shooting non-commercially in the street. I know our UK blogging friends have some thorny issues around this unlike the US. I had been focusing for this shot on the woman leaning against the busstop with a bouquet of flowers when this woman wandered into the frame and I refocused before the light changed. These are taken in split seconds.

She's so modern, yet so sixties. Fashion turns on a wheel and comes around again.

You sure know how to get me to click on a thumbnail...just show a pretty girl in a short skirt and a pink shawl and I'm right there.

Very nice. Beware of Steffi, though; I think this kind of thing is habit-forming! ;-)

I agree with Petrea; I felt she was sixties, too! I don't listen to music on an Ipod, so I don't have the wire/scarf problem, but I often get my camera strap tangled in my shoulder bag... I love to sneak candid shots. I must practice with the right-angle attachment I bought a while back....I'll bring it to Seattle.

Well here in Paris we love our scarves. In fact, my daughter bought Eva ( age 7) a scarf today and she looks so cute in it. I use mine to hide my "turkey neck". Wayne does too, he just won't admit it. :)

I like everything about this photo! You've one a wonderful job capturing a modern moment as this gal fights with those blasted tangly ipod earbuds. I'm not one for dresses, but this one is really cute, especially with the black bag. I wish you'd asked her where she got her dress!

Yes, it's a bother when all of one's cool accessories get tangled up in each other!

Lovely pic, Kim. I'm in awe at the speed with which you can find and capture these scenes.

{LOL, Virginia!}

Her concentration is sorting her scarf is fascinating. She must be intent on what she's listening to. Super capture. Lovely that swirl of pink.

Very nice shot. I like the pink scarf and the end of it blowing in the wind. It is very difficult to get shots on the fly like this, it must take lots of practice to aim and focus so quickly.

I'd ask, "Who on EARTH would wear a scarf during the summer?!?" but then I realize you're over there on the western side of the state. Lucky you. Our summers days are almost always over 100* F and pretty miserable, even in shorts and a tank top or a sundress. Forget a scarf, but bring on the sunglasses!
