Tulip Farm

The tulips in my garden were glorious the past couple weeks and are now past their prime and the petals dropping. I took this shot at a tulip farm north of Seattle in the Skagit Valley and wish everyone could experience the sight of millions of blooms on a perfect spring day. It was magical. Happy Earth Day!

I'm so glad I found your page a few months ago. I'm in Michigan finishing my masters, and then I'm headed to Seattle. Your pictures really help fill the void in the meantime.

You definitely succeeded in capturing and conveying some of that magic in this image, Kim.

That's a classic kind of shot with perfect use of a wide angle lens (I'm going out on a limb here). Your composition is different, though, from most low-angle flower-and-landscape shots. That perfectly straight horizon does something for me.

I love that perspective! I missed going this year and last year. Hopefully I'll make it next year!

How come Bob always beats me with the same comments I want to make? :)

I'd be interested in hearing how you kept that horizon nice and straight on this fantastically beautiful photo.

Hey---my WV is 'horized,' almost like 'horizon'!

@Bryan, glad to give you a little visual of home.

@ everyone, thank you so much for your kind comments!

@ Bob & Bibi, thanks guys! Re. the horizon, I think the nearly uniform height of the flowers and the fact that rows of white tulips were beyond the pink and yellow variety in the forground created a small white stripe. So the horizon line seems fairly uniform and accented by a white line. . .all quite unintentional except trying to pay attention to the rule of thirds Also, I think the blue of the sky forms a stripe of its own, emphasizing the proportions. I was just trying my hand at a wide angle close up with buildings/trees beyond. I was probably 3" away from the tulip on the left, squatting and crouching as low as I could.
