Gung Hay Fat Choy! Best wishes to everyone as the Year of the Horse begins! Seattle has been celebrating Lunar New Year all week with various events and will conclude on Saturday at Hing Hay Park in the International District with Lion and Dragon Dances, a children's traditional costume parade and many other festivities from 11:00-4:00. This is a shot I took while visiting my former city of San Francisco. I was walking in SF Chinatown when I came across kids from Lau Elementary School rehearsing a dance routine for the new years parade there. I remember how excited and proud a boy named Derick in my preschool class there was the year he was chosen to perform in the Lion Dance. I also remember how deafening the fire crackers were while watching him!

All the festive holiday lights had been put away after the frenetic New Year's Eve fire works display from the Space Needle. The incandescent blue light of evening put on its own light show to backdrop the Needle rising above John Fleming's "Grass Blades" sculpture.

Best Shot of the Year 2012

As has been a tradition with City Daily Photo Blogs for many years, I'm posting my best shot I captured and shared on SDP in the last year as my New Year's Day 2013 post. I took this last February and I hope you like it. Seattlites are always trying to capture some new perspective or aspect of one of the world's most photographed icons, and I was rather pleased with this discovery as I was looking more closely at a nearby sculpture I'd seen a million times and chanced to glance this new-to-me view. Best wishes to everyone for a beautiful new year ahead!

Casting Shadows

The year of the dragon will yield to the year of the snake at lunar new year, but until then he's doing his best to cast good fortune and flex his muscles. Who knew dragons were into pole dancing? :-)
Seattle's International District's various boundaries are marked by several of these dragons. It's a great area to shop and eat inexpensively, which is exactly what I was doing there.

The Flying Apron Bakery Cafe is a haven for those who are vegan or must avoid gluten and wheat products. Their bakery goods are their claim to fame, but they also serve soups and salads. For many they are an oasis of safe, wholesome eating. There are so many folks who need places like this in their lives. Many of you may be familiar with Seattle's own Gluten Free Girl who has blogged for many years, raised awareness of the need for widely available gluten free products, and has published a run-away best seller. She's taking a little rest from blogging starting this month, but I understand a new cookbook is due out very soon.

Snow Day Hero, Our Jolly Postman

We've always had the best mail carrier in Seattle, and today he was out there trudging through the wet powder and cold temps just as cheerfully and efficiently as any other kind of day he usually encounters. No snow day for him."Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Thanks Mr. Postman! I ventured out in snow boots with the camera and caught some of the snow day fun folks were having on the hilly streets. Adults and children all in happy spirits.

Theme Day: Best Shot of 2011

As we always do on January 1 each year, City Daily Photo Bloggers share with you our best shots from the previous year. Here is a photo from last February taken in the Wallingford neighborhood on a cold winter day when it was hailing. The cheerful lighted neon of the historic art deco era 45th Guild Theater could get anyone out of a blue funk :-). I didn't spend much time thinking about which photo to choose, so you might like to see the 50 Best of Set picked by a computer algorithm as my "most interesting" shots of the year. Lake Union & Eastlake

Boaters were making the best of a sunny day earlier in autumn. The Eastlake neighborhood hugs the eastern shore of Lake Union and is home to several floating home communities. William Boeing built an airplane hanger there in 1915 and in it built his first B & W seaplane. Behind Eastlake is the ridge of Capitol Hill which runs north toward the University District. Beyond you can see the Cascade range.

Time Has a Way

Seattle's moist climate plus a shady spot tend to be a perfect combination to foster growth of moss and fungi, like on this headstone beneath a sheltering tree in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. I've heard it said that the dash between our birth and death dates represents the period of our lives. When those who knew us are gone too, is the memory of who we were lost? Does time slowly fade all trace of us? Moss and lichen here have chosen to embellish someone's memory with color and texture. Perhaps best to pick a sunny plot to avoid nature's artistry :-).

It's CDPBlogger's first of the month theme day, with participants exploring the idea of perspective. This shot is from the perspective of the bluff in the Magnolia neighborhood, looking out over Puget Sound, Bainbridge Island, and the Olympic Mountains. Sometimes I just need to take a big breath and step back in a natural setting to gain perspective of what's real, what's important. I was tempted to feature a photo of a local friendly cat from the ground up to offer some "purr-spective," but we could all use a view like this right about now in our day, couldn't we? :-) Check out other City Daily Photo blogger's interpretation of this theme. Seattle Photographer & His Cute Pooch

I often run into photographers as I'm out and about around town. Yesterday I got to meet Robby, a photographer with a power chair that he has mounted with a terrific sturdy metal mono pod, fabricated by Glaser's Cameras, atop which rides his new Canon Power Shot camera and grip (his old camera took a spill recently and broke). Robby's dog was busy posing for a cute mug shot taken by one of the store clerks at All the Best Pet Shop on Queen Anne Ave North. I saw this scene unfolding when I entered the shop and quickly took this shot. I walked over and showed the shot to Robby, upon which I got a knowing smile and he surprised me by retrieving his own photo portfolio from his backpack. Ah, someone like me! I hadn't noticed his camera, I had been so focused on his little dog and the clerk trying to take its picture. I had a treat seeing Robby's shots and learned of his successful one man show and sale held at a local coffee house. It was fun to run into a fellow enthusiast and see his work. Photographers, that is :-). Okay, everyone in your best voice on the count of four, 1 2 3 4 hit it. . ."I always feel like. . .somebody's watching me." Wherever I go in Seattle I usually see at least one other person with camera in hand roaming around like me. This day I sort of hit the jackpot at Sunset Hill Park.

Paths We Did Not Know

I am thinking of all those affected by the earthquake in Japan and resulting wave action around the Pacific Rim. I am so sorry for the loss and destruction suffered by so many and am wishing the survivors comfort. I hope the aid coming from friends around the globe will convey our concern and very best wishes. I have experienced a 6.9 and 7.1 earthquake in which friends died. I can't imagine the exponential power of 8.9 with tsunamis. I am wishing our friends whose lives have been suddenly altered the very best as recovery begins.

A path leading down to the Sound beckoned me for a quiet walk on Whidbey Island. I thought of a favorite passage by Howard Thurman about the unknown that awaits us on our personal journeys and that's where I pulled the title for this image.

Happy Birthday Chuck!

If you wander through Pike Place Market you may come across the wonderful work of professional photographer Chuck Pefley, and if you're lucky, Chuck himself. We came upon him just after he'd finished a conversation with a customer and was starting to take a reading break in his Market day stall. I've met Chuck a number of times since he joined the City Daily Photo Blog family with One a Day, Mostly Seattle. The longtime Seattle resident is not only a skilled photographer, but also a Vespa scooter enthusiast active in the Westenders Scooter Club, and a very fun and nice guy who loves the beautiful scenes, friendships and adventures his travels near and far bring him (often illustrated in his beautiful prints). Today is Chuck's birthday and I'm sending best wishes for a wonderful day!

Sunday Bridges #13: Double Helix Pedestrian Bridge

As promised, another view of the pedestrian bridge that crosses a railroad corridor to link 15th Ave NW with the Amgen campus and the waterfront and pier beyond. The design takes its inspiration from the double helix of DNA chains. I thought the pairing of something usually seen under an electron microscope with the constellation of stars visible above, usually seen best through a telescope, was in interesting pairing of the wonders within and outside ourselves. This is What Gets Us Through the Gray

. . .that, and going outside no matter what the light and sky. Yesterday lizziviggi commented on the sunny day photo ". . . I really like this photo-- the line of grey bridge, the line of grey kayak, the line of grey sidewalk. But best of all, it's not on a grey day!" We grab it when it happens! But in the gray months we look for color. This colorful flower stand (The Flower Lady) is tucked onto the sidewalk in the Eastlake neighborhood on my normal route from Capitol Hill to points north and west of Lake Union. Every time I pass I take in an eyeful of floral and rainbow umbrella color. Now the daffodils, hyacinths and primroses are blooming in my garden, so I'm getting a little dose of color right at home, too. Rains returned last night after a weekend of pure blue skies.

Green 2010

Some friends from the Portland area were in town and we were walking in the Uptown neighborhood after dinner. I had wanted to show them the light show at Counterbalence Park, but I didn't know that we would see this. A photographer was making an image for a New Year's card (there, don't you feel better now to know someone was later than you getting out holiday cards :-) ). His models were getting soaked in the rain while he shot from under an umbrella. To see him with them and another color scheme, click my More Seattle Stuff Page. Blog Day: Best Photo of the Year 2009

Today many City Daily Photo Bloggers are posting what they consider to have been their Best Photo of 2009. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants. I hope you enjoy seeing the cream of the crop from a dedicated group of photobloggers, most of whom posted 365 images from their city in 2009. I think all of them had very hard choices to make. Wouldn't you know it, what many of you considered my best shot from 2009 is atypical in that if it weren't in the context of the Seattle Daily Photo blog, you probably wouldn't associate it with Seattle at all. I call it Field of Dreams. We took a spontaneous drive north of Seattle in late April, meandered over toward the Cascades then cut back west and ended up in the middle of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival where we spent from 4 to 7 PM in the flower fields. It was an amazingly beautiful afternoon, warm with a soft breeze. A family including this lovely woman with her sari trailing behind her wandered into my shot as I was focusing on the colorful rows of tulips. I quickly re-framed the shot, focused on her as she was walking, and clicked. It is sure NOT the Space Needle, eh? :-) I've put a few Best of 2009 runners up on More Seattle Stuff.

iPhone Wednesday #26: USE

Looking up at letters on the south elevation of the Seattle Art Museum, this seemed like some sort of injunction from on high. It's my iPhone Wednesday shot for this week, and I used Tilt Shift and The Best Camera to edit this image. I hope you are encouraged to get out there and USE your own smart phone camera creatively.
