Torn Obama Poster

Torn Obama Poster

Last night over 5000 people packed into the warehouse at Pier 30 for a campaign rally with Senator Hillary Clinton, and many more were turned away for lack of room. Today Senator Barack Obama will hold a noontime Stand for Change rally at Key arena, doors open at 11 AM. And this evening Senator John McCain will be at the Weston for a fund raising dinner at 6 PM, and afterward meet campaign volunteers and the public, leaving by 9 PM. Our Washington caucuses are tomorrow, and they should be lively! These posters by a local artist (if you know the person, let me know) were distributed by the artist last fall and someone completely covered four concrete pillars at the north end of the Ballard Bridge where it passes over Leary Way. Paris Daily Photo recently featured a collage by artist and skateboarder Shepard Fairey of Obey Giant fame who had a show of his street art at a Paris gallery, and who has designed 3 official Obama posters, but these pictured here are not his design.

Nice poster! I think I only saw one political poster this past tuesday here in the OC but it did not look like this one.

Was this torn poster an act of vandalism? Lots of crazies in this world, and this is the first time I thought about the possibility of danger for this candidate.

I love this shot!!

I wouldn't worry that it's an indication of violence... some people just really hate signs posted on columns around the city. I see an old man on Capitol Hill fairly regularly who makes it his job to take signs down, no matter what they are are about.

Lots of lively debates ahead I'm guessing. Great photo you captured there. I've been following the USA election closely since I may be moving to the Virginia area this year!

Rodney, did I ever tell you about the time I was stopped by police officers from 4 different OC cities in one night? I was putting up posters for a 30 mile walk-a-thon being held the next morning, for which I had a permit. Still got stopped, though. Posters in OC are never what they are in some other places ;^).

Kate, if you become familiar with trends in street art, it is way common to see posters and stickers torn and room made for new things. Ron Paul's supporters had apparently tried to remove these, then when they wouldn't come off easily, they stenciled Ron Paul 2008 over many of them. These Obama posters had been up for many months. It's interesting that you should mention having thoughts for candidate's safety. Seattle is a HUGE Obama town, as born out by the caucuses and the droves that had to be turned away from his speech the day before. it occurred to me long ago that this man needs good protection, as do all the candidates. But the comparisons to RFK brought chilling flash backs to my mind.

Sparkling Allison, yes, I think you're right. Street art is temporary, a bills posted stay pristine for all too short a time.

Pat, record numbers of people came to the rallys held by the 3 major candidates yesterday, and attended the caucuses today. The democratic party race is particularly suspensefully close. It's good to see so many citizens participating in their democracy.

I like your shot of this, and how you kept the red in for a little spice.

I think these particular Obama posters were designed by "Obey," the artist discussed at Paris Daily Photo a week or so ago. Here's Obey's website: http://www.obeygiant.com/

Couldn't make a link to it. It's February 6th on PDP.

Ooh, nasty PIAPS supporters possibly. So many talented artists for Obama. His 'Change', 'Hope' and 'Progress' mantras are actually somewhat self-mocking. Making your own Obama posters is totally addicting, I laughed so hard I almost had a breakdown. LOL!
