Summer Evening on S. Ferdinand Street

Summer Evening on Ferdinand Street

Within a four block stretch of the Columbia City neighborhood's commercial zone there must be more than a dozen eateries, coffee houses, and bars. This is the view east from Rainier Ave. looking up S. Ferdinand Street where people are waiting outside to be seated at Kallaloo restaurant, and other people are coming and going around them. Can you spot the typo on the Jones Bar-B-Q sign?

Depending on the time of year and time of day, different windows catch the sun's light and can give fun light shows of their own. Here I've caught a stripe of central windows up the face of the Washington Mutual Tower reflecting the sunset glow. The mountain was out at evening as well.

Roller Blading Very Popular

Roller Blading

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

The very popular 3.2 mile workout and walking path around the perimeter of Greenlake is divided into two halves: one for feet and one for wheels. Roller blades seem to outnumber bicycles on the wheeled side. This woman has her routine down to the basic take along needs: water and music. Most roller bladers wear protective knee, elbow and wrist guards, as well as helmets. They go at high speed, so a crash and burn would really hurt. To see more of them and to see the path instructions that are embedded into the sidewalk in bronze lettering and symbols, see my More Seattle Stuff page.

As the last days of summer wind down people are enjoying the sunny days outdoors. Greenlake in the heart of Seattle's north end is a lovely municipal lake with a popular 3.2 mile walking/running/cycling path around it's perimeter. One can get out on the water in canoes, kayaks, sail boats, paddle boats, and row boats. There is a swimming beach and adjacent parks which are always full of sporting activities. A very pleasant and tranquil place to come in any season.

"Under my um-ber-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella. . ." When WILL that song drop off the charts? It came to mind because I thought we'd start the week off with an abstract. This is a detail of a huge windblown inside-out red umbrella sculpture, ( Angie's Umbrella, Jay Pridgeon, 2002) located in a roadway divider on Western Ave. at Lenora in Belltown. This whimsical bumbershoot is kinetic and swivels whichever way the wind is blowing. (For a full view, click here.)

Speaking of music and bumbershoots. . .this coming weekend ushers in the 3 day Labor Day holiday, and with it at Seattle Center comes the huge, fantastic, and exciting annual Bumbershoot music and arts festival. It seems the whole of Seattle turns out for this fun end of summer treat. It is a ginormous, something-for-everyone multi festival of music, dance, film, comedy, literary and visual arts. Everything from world renown headliners to fresh new talent is there to experience. If you will be in town, check it out and try to snag some remaining tickets. Highly recommended!

Warm Evening

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

Neighbors of an older apartment building on Capitol Hill out on the staircase shooting the breeze and keeping cool on a very warm evening. Friday was glorious in Seattle, but our weekend may be rainy. There is a turn in the feel of the air this week and it's getting dark earlier. . .sigh. Here comes autumn around the corner. Wishing you all a wonderful late summer weekend to relax.

And Warm Thanks to You All for Visiting SDP: yesterday Seattle Daily Photo had its 50,000 th visitor since I began these daily posts in July 2006. Visitors from 124 countries have stopped by so far. Thanks very much!

. . .as in "be the change in the world that you want to see"? Quite a change love would make, eh? The fellow backing up this classic Mercedes with the sun roof open to the rays also has a tag on the license plate indicating the vehicle runs on biodiesel. This was in the Ballard neighborhood where biodiesel has been manufactured and available for over six years at Dr. Dan's Alternative Fuelwerks.

Family of Five Fun

What a pleasure to see a family really enjoy themselves while on holiday. You should have heard the giggles from the baby! And the little boy is looking down at the moving shadow. As in most large cities, many carriage services in Seattle offer tours through interesting parts of town during the summer and Thanksgiving through Christmas holiday seasons.

How to Beat the Traffic on the Fremont Bridge

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

For the better part of this year the Fremont Bridge and its approaches have been undergoing major reconstruction and maintenance. It has been a bit of a headache as it is one of the busiest draw bridges in the world. Because it is so very low over the the active Lake Washington Ship Canal and hosts scads of vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians from the Fremont and Queen Anne Hill neighborhoods, it has affected both marine and land traffic patterns. Now that most everything is done on the project and the bridge has been reopened to normal traffic, it is only rush hours and boats passing through again that seem to cause big back ups. How to beat the traffic? Hundreds of cyclists that use the nearby Burke-Gilman Trail and the bike lane over the bridge could tell you! (And yes, that IS a Duck Tour craft in traffic on the bridge!)

New WiFi Service on Washington State Ferries

Coming & Going

Here's a perfect blending of old and new. Riding the Washington State Ferries was a favorite relaxing study haunt during my college days. Now the WSF system is adding WiFi service (for a fee) to many of its routes. Three routes already make the service available, and apparently one can connect from anywhere on board, even the car deck. I'm thinking this will be a very popular service with regular commuters. BC Ferries (Canadian) and a San Francisco Bay ferry service are also planning new WiFi services soon. Washington Sate Ferries runs the largest ferry system in North America. I photographed these two ferries coming and going on Seattle's Elliott Bay.

Tooling Leather

For the past few years in the US, low rise jeans have been a popular fashion staple for women. Hand in hand with this trend has been a revival of oldschool wide leather belts. I came across a business that began during the first wave of this fashion and is still going strong over thirty years later. This craftsperson is hard at work in the Marakesh leather arts shop at the Market. She is petite but can muscle around the presses and tools of her trade. It was good to see her interact directly with people for whom she had just customized items. Pike Place Market turned 100 years old on August 17 and supports a very vibrant part of Seattle daily life.

Seattle is full of very sweet people. This is one of them. I hope the sunset light that limbs her and the expression of her little dog do a lot to convey the warmth of this woman's personality. Seen in the Fremont district.

Father & Daughter in Post Alley

Walking past Cafe Campagne, a father and daughter stroll through Post Alley toward Pine Street. Visitors remark that this shop- and restaurant-lined passage reminds them more of Europe than the US. Just a short distance away in lower Post Alley, the Market Theater area with its gum wall removes all illusions of being anywhere near Paris!

Market Bouquet

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

Flowers are inexpensive and abundant at the Market. I shot this through the window of a coffee shop. The young woman was waiting outside at the corner, her colorful purchase of sunflowers and gladiolas in arm. I often times will take the bus to the market to get a bouquet and something fresh for dinner. The flower and veggie farmers are small time operators who may only sell what they themselves grow. Many were hit hard by the flooding in their growing areas last fall. If we keep purchasing their products, they can more quickly get back on more solid financial ground. Farmers at all the neighborhood farmers' markets also need our patronage to rebound from what has been a rough year. They are our direct link to fresh, healthy food supplies. If they go under, we all lose, big time.

Famous Fish Mongers

If you've shopped at Pike Place Market, you no doubt have passed Pike Place Fish, the seafood seller famous for the lively comedic floor show the staff puts on when someone makes a purchase. They make a lot of noise and literally throw fish through the air, much to the delight of the tourist crowd that gathers around. This vendor is directly in front of Rachel the life size bronze piggy bank. There are other fish vendors at the market with lower prices, but these guys have an edge on the entertainment factor. Each is suited up in a gray tee shirt and Grundon's seaman's orange rubber coveralls, suspenders and rubber boots.

So, what's the price of fesh halibut at your local fish market?

This is the view from the pedestrian overpass in yesterday's shot, looking southwest past the point at Blue Ridge. Looks like a one design class sailing race on the Sound. People are enjoying the sandy beach at Carkeek Park on a beautiful summer evening. By mid November chum salmon will be spawning up the painstakingly restored habitat of Piper's Creek. Hope you have a restful, beautiful Sunday!

People hanging out and enjoying the view on the pedestrian overpass at Carkeek Park. Below them are railroad tracks that trace around the edge of the Puget Sound. Visible from this walkway is the mouth of Piper's Creek, once reduced by the railroad to a small culvert. After years of work and vigilance, community members have restored the creek's habitat to a level where chum salmon could be reintroduced and succeed in returning to spawn here year after year.

Former Military Grounds at Discovery Park

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

So many urban SDP shots lately, lets go for something a little more pastoral today. Out along the bluffs of the Sound is a wonderful and versatile open space called Discovery Park. It's noted for its spectacular views and is a haven for flora and fauna. There is a large population of eagles there. Part of the grounds used to be a military installation called Fort Lawton. A building still in use as a residence is visible beyond this meadow where swallows dive and swoop for their evening meal, and wild sweet peas grow in abundance. I saw swallows, hummingbirds, spotted towhees, gulls, robins, rabbits, and northern flickers (see my More Seattle Stuff page for a peek at some of them). Hope you all enjoy a wonderful Friday and can get outdoors to enjoy the dwindling summer days!

Monorail Boy

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

That little face peering down from a window of the elevated Monorail to the street below was so cute. Trains of all kinds and kids are an inseparable duet.

The Seattle Monorail was a fixture of the 1962 World's Fair. 45 years later it still connects Seattle Center with the Downtown shopping area at Westlake Center and is mostly used by tourists. In 1997 Seattlites voted to expand the monorail system to become a viable part of the area's rapid transit system. Plans were made for an initial 14 mile Green Line to connect West Seattle, Downtown, and the northwest neighborhoods of the city; however, those plans were finally nixed eight years into the planning process after much controversy and taxpayer expense. The historic existing one mile route of the Monorail had its own troubles in 2005 costing millions of dollars to repair and months of down time after two trains collided and wedged together, the result of a known design flaw from a 1988 platform rebuild and operator error.

Thinking of Ham

. . .Ham of London Daily Photo, that is, who has featured a series of wonderful found elephant shots from all over London. When I passed by the London-style phone booth paired with the Elephant & Castle archway, I just had to take this shot for him! This pub is in front of the Red Lion Hotel on 5th Ave, and I think it's one a a chain of such themed restaurant/bars. I haven't eaten here, but the outdoor patio was packed with what looked like locals (rather than tourists) so I assume the food is good. This is the second red London-style phone booth I've noticed in Seattle (another is at the Lockspot Cafe at the H.M. Chittenden Locks in the Ballard neighborhood).

Bronze footprint and signature sculptures of Microsoft co-founders and native sons, Paul Allen and Bill Gates, are part of an in-concrete display in the sidewalks that surround the Nordstrom downtown Seattle store. Allen and Gates started Microsoft in 1975, making their mark in history through their youthful mastery of coding and development of software for the personal computing revolution. They are now two of the world's wealthiest people and two of the Pacific Northwest's largest philanthropists and idea/real property developers.

Blue Angels Personell

I happened upon a mob of more than ten men and women from the Navy's Blue Angels team who were pouring out of their downtown accommodations late Sunday afternoon after three days of jet air shows above Lake Washington during Seafair. At first I thought they were all paramedics leaving some sort of training session, and by the time I was close enough to read their insignia, most had passed me. These four were the last out the door and were headed up the street, presumably to their transportation out of town. None of the four were pilots during the show, as their patches indicate supporting roles. Still, people ran up to them about a 1/2 block from here and I watched them kindly drop their duffles and pose arms behind back for pictures with people on the street.

A woman walks through a passage at night in the Convention Center area after an evening of shopping the summer sales. Today, Saturday, and Sunday, Seafair events will again take center stage in Seattle and pull a lot of people out to Lake Washington to see the 57th year of hydroplane races starting at 10 AM, and the Blue Angels precision jet team's air show at 1:30 PM. Then at night there will be another air show with a plane that uses some fireworks, followed by a huge music and fireworks show (the 2nd year for this display).

August Theme Day: Typical Breakfast

Photo & Text Copyright 2007 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

It's the first of August theme day, and 100 city daily photobloggers are prepared to show you what a typical breakfast in their city is like. This was breakfast at my house: eggs, avocado, hot sauce, toast with apricot jam, orange juice, and black coffee (for a close up, see my More Seattle Stuff page). Yes, that is an old map of Paris under the table glass. . .we like to imagine walking the streets there; but, the Mt. Rainier posters can give you the real sense of where this breakfast was eaten.
