Relaxing Together

Relaxing Together Before the New Year

A crossword puzzle, a good article to read, some warm yummy food on a cold winter day, sheltered in a picturesque 19th century building enjoying the calm before the new year. This is a post card for you from Port Townsend. I visited this beautiful town while on holiday with family and couldn't resist capturing the warm scene this lovely couple and the reflected street scene in the window of a restaurant as we passed by in the cold rain outside.

Santa seems to be taking alternative transportation to reach the island communities in the Pacific Northwest. I spied him kayaking in Port Townsend, about two hours northeast of Seattle via ferry and car travel for regular folks. My photo friend PrimaSeaDiva asked if he has 8 tiny orca whales pulling this rig :-).

Gumcicles drip from the curved brick window frame of the Market Theater's box office in Post Alley. The ever expanding Market Theater Gum Wall long ago turned the corner and encroached into the theater entryway. Now the DNA samples are multi-layers thick all around the window. No matter, as the note asks patrons to come into the lobby to get their Improve tickets. Quick, what improvisation would you devise for the kids song "Icky Sticky Bubble Gum"? :-) Here are previous photos starting in 2006 so you can see the growing accumulation of colorful blobs in this tucked away area.

My daughter and I were shopping for a special baby gift and found it at this very well stocked children's specialty store north of us in Edmonds. I enjoy window shopping the small businesses in Seattle's many neighborhood commercial districts and the "main streets" of nearby towns." Edmonds' downtown is particularly charming and the fountain at the heart of the traffic circle features sparkly Christmas lights.

The Ambach & Rice gallery on Ballard Avenue was holding an opening of photographic works by German artist Martina Sauter, which I attended earlier this fall. As I left and looked back inside the spare space, I noticed the reflections of people in animated conversation in the highly polished concrete flooring. . . which almost imitates the rain slick streets we are experiencing outside right now.

A woman changed her loud verbal abuse of a man to a physical attack while passers-by watched and a guy across the street took video of the altercation with his cell phone.

This is an architectural detail shot of Harborview Medical Center. According to its website, it "began in 1877 as a six-bed King County Hospital in South Seattle. In 1931, the hospital moved to its present location overlooking Puget Sound and changed its name to Harborview Hospital. Since then, Harborview Medical Center has become a leading medical center and expanded its facilities through voter-approved bond projects and Harborview reserve funds." Harborview is owned and operated by UW Medicine.

Seattle Police officers and parking personnel are often stationed outside parking garage exits to facilitate exiting cars and keep downtown traffic flowing smoothly during rush hour and special events. This officer was keeping warm and visible in his winter wear.

One of the brightly painted bus shelters in the Beacon Hill neighborhood features an homage to the art of Pacific Northwest coastal native peoples. Bus shelters often feature original designs of neighbors, schools and community organizations, and I always enjoy seeing them.

Gates Foundation Nearing Completion

I saw this model of the new Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation campus. The view here shows the intersection of Mercer St. and 5th Ave. From the 2007 groundbreaking at a 12 acre parking lot adjacent to Seattle Center the Gates Foundation campus has steadily taken shape. The first construction was of a multistory below ground parking structure with a living roof and educational visitors center (visible to the right). Now boomerang shaped buildings A and B are constructed and interior finish work is taking place throughout their 6 floors (the structure closest in this model photo and the building furthest back). Building C to the left has not been started yet, pending an agreement with the city about the specifics of the Viaduct replacement tunnel and surface street approaches, which at one point would have encroached on building C's site. It seems a plan has been worked out, pending City Council approval, to curve 6th Ave around the site and modify the surface street tunnel approach route to avoid cutting through the campus. The parking garage has been open since 2008 (I showed you the art glass wall of that here). The visitor center and buildings A and B will open next May and will be occupied by over 1000 Foundation employees. Hardscape and landscaping are going on right now along 5th Ave and Mercer Street, as well as the interior of the campus. The Gates Foundation researches and provides grants to impact global health, extreme poverty and development, education, and information technologies.

I was downtown for a performance when I saw this peeking through the the upper window of Benaroya Hall, home of Seattle's Symphony. The familiar blue-green glass dome of the Second & Seneca building has a new adornment for the holidays: a ring of red light. It is sometimes called R2D2 or the Ban Roll On Building,

Three choirs and the orchestra and ensembles from Seattle Pacific University held two sold out performances of their popular annual program of Advent and Christmas music at Benaroya Hall, home of Seattle's Symphony. There are seasonal performances of music, dance, theater, and poetry in venues all around the city. Whatever performing art you enjoy, you'll find outstanding examples of it here.

It's a sunny, frosty morning and the mountain is out. The skies are clear. It is Saturday. Mike Marshall and Darol Anger are playing Angels We Have Heard On High on the stereo. The cats are managing to stay out of the Christmas tree. Things unseen are casting shadows and letting us know they are there. Happy Saturday, everyone! :-)

Wishing all who are celebrating it a happy third night of Hanukkah. The last bit of western light in the sky above University Village was such an intense blue it made even the mundane outline of shopping center buildings look special in all their holiday lights and finery. Rachel's Dream

Rachel, the life-size piggy bank at Pike Place Market, enjoys entertaining visitors with her prize-winning porcine features and helping them pose for portraits with her. As handsome and fun as her striking figure may be, Rachel is one very serious pig. Serious about collecting much needed money. Rachel donates every penny stuffed into her magnificent self to help the disadvantaged adults and children who receive vital social services through The Market Foundation. She's dreaming of a full Christmas so that she can share it all with the dear people living even more on the margins than usual in this very challenging economy. Not able to visit Rachel in person to drop coins in her slot? She's able to receive them on line :-) and has some fun goodies for benefit sale. You can check out the extent of the programs funded by the Market Foundation here (scroll down to "Housing & Social Services"). It's why this little piggy went to Market.

It's ten to ten and the late night taxi cab rush has begun after downtown performances let out and drivers dash to pick up new fares. Seattle is decked out in its holiday finery and Pike Place Market is adorned with lights, giant fruits and vegetables, and dozens of Christmas trees and swags of greenery. This was the rainy night scene at the Market when I walked by after a concert Monday night. The City Daily Photo Blogger's December theme day is "Time.
