$ 2.5 Million Sleepless In Seattle Location

$ 2.5 Million Location

Here is a rare opportunity for a wealthy movie buff. The floating home used for exterior shots in the 1993 Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan hit romantic comedy, "Sleepless in Seattle," is available for sale for the first time in 14 years. Many visitors to Seattle ask to see the over 2000 square foot "houseboat" with the killer views of Lake Union. It is the tan one with green and purple trim peeking at the very end of a this private residence dock. There are only 500 houseboats / floating homes around Lake Union's shores, and I believe this is one of the very largest (4 bedrooms/2 baths) and has unobstructed views. Yes, that's the bench Hank's sits on during the fireworks scene, just visible at the end of the dock beyond that hanging flower basket. Visitors can only catch a full view from a respectful distance via one of the Lake Union tour boat operations. For other views of its setting, see my More Seattle Stuff page here, and see the real estate ad here.

The green glass dome of the Second & Seneca Building is one of the most easily identifiable architectural details visible from the Seattle waterfront. The building has been lovingly dubbed the Ban Roll On building and R2D2 because of its distinctive ball shaped dome which glows from within at night. You are viewing it from the top deck of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in this photo.

From iconic symbol of a space age world's fair to 46 years a dominant structure on the skyline, Seattle's Space Needle is an inescapable (and marketable) image, here rendered in metal, pasta, paper, and porcelain. You'll even find it in ice sculptures, blown glass, and seemingly etched in the psyche as the trademark of the city by the Sound. Do you have an example lying around your house somewhere?

Tulips are finally in full bloom in yards all over Seattle. The unusually cold late winter and early spring even delayed the blooms of the famous Tulip Festival north of here in Skagit Valley, where hundreds of tulip varieties are grown for the bulb market. I was focusing on these red-orange tulips, standing uphill a bit from this gentleman's home when he stepped into his front yard to walk his dog and enjoy a cigar. I kind of liked the "man as bokeh" effect he created by stumbling into the shot.

Seen in a split second, and not the best capture in the rush to get the shot, but I couldn't resist their smiles. This couple was crossing a downtown street hand in hand, enjoying an animated conversation. Spring is in the air in Seattle today, so here's to seeing more couples sharing happy moments like this. They certainly brought a smile to my face. Hope you are enjoying your Saturday!

Removing the delectable day olds from the window at the close of the day. This Queen Anne neighborhood bakery cafe's windows are often steamy when I walk by late at night. A lovely place to sit with a cuppa and some wonderful warm offering while slowly coming to on a spring morning, and a nice lunch menu, too. Happy Friday everyone!

Indie musician Ani DiFranco's tour bus out front at the Moore Theatre last night as folks were waiting for the doors to open. They wouldn't allow me to bring the camera in, but Christine from Seattle Sound was shooting right next to me during the show and as it happens had the same camera/lens set up as me, so if you see her shots, it's what I saw. Way high energy show with lots of great new material mixed with many old faves, played to a sold out and extremely appreciative house.

One of Seattle's favorite and most celebrated Seahawks has been cut from the team and will be moving on to new horizons. Everyone wishes it wasn't so. Running back Shaun Alexander has had an awesome NFL career here at Quest Field, marred in recent years by injuries. He's given back a lot personally to Seattle and is one of those rare sports figures mom's actually feel good about their kids wanting to emulate, (unlike one of his teammates who is also in the news facing charges right now for allegedly striking his girlfriend in public). Wishing "happy trails" to #37.

Visitors to Seattle are enduring much lower than average temps, snow, hail, and rain as a storm system passes through from the north. So, this woman finding her way near the convention center is dressed for our unexpected spring. The sky shows are dramatic and beautiful, though!

Seen in Pike Place Market: Gorgeous woman standing on a step stool, blowing bubbles, cigarette in hand. I saw her from a distance, but think she must have a Market performer permit. My husband had a permit to play his sax there last year, and I've only noticed musicians before. Oh, yeah, and that Silver Statue Guy who spooked people when he moved . . . ;^) Hope its a great Sunday everyone!

I think she's expressing in her fashion sense the ambivalence most Seattlites are having toward this season. She's prepared for the cold, but hopeful some warm rays will appear after all: fashionable boots, woolly mitten, leather jacket, and tights for cooler than seasonal temps, yet a scalloped mini hemline holding out hope for possible error in the forecast for SNOW! In April! Alas, that mitten came in useful as snow won out and the north end of Seattle saw quite a bit of the white stuff fall last evening. Wishing all who celebrate it this evening a glowing and warm start to Passover.

This "Bob shot" is dedicated to Sally of Sydney Daily Photo who is celebrating two years in the daily blogosphere. Let's all head over to her beach party and help her blow out her blogoversary candles.

This police horse apparently didn't like going down hill on the cobbled street at Pike Place Market and kept balking, drawing a lot of attention with its whinnying. That pinto cuts a dashing figure with its tail flying, though, don't you think? Have a great weekend everyone!

I fell in love with this the minute I saw it. This rustic log and stone Arts & Crafts era transit shelter was built by developers Charles Denny and Elbert Blaine in 1901 as their real estate office, with an eye to converting it to a street car shelter after their parcels in the Madrona neighborhood were sold. I thought it was charming in its setting next to its lily pond inhabited by ducks.

A rare sun break on a cold and wet day gave this weird light effect looking up Yale Place E in the Eastlake neighborhood. This contemporary concrete street is atypical for Seattle with its stream of runoff flowing down the center. The sunlight hit the wet pavement creating a quality of light that made near silhouettes of the people getting out between showers to walk their dogs. Their bright jackets magically appear, just as I saw it through the camera. This is my 650th post! Thanks for checking out the view at SDP each day!

Smile! These bared killer whale teeth would make an orthodontist envious. This close up of a huge Kaigani Haida grave monument replica is directly outside the entrance to the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. This is a replica carved by museum director emeritus Bill Holm, based on photos and fragments of the 1880 original carved by John Wallace in Howkan, Alaska for a member of the Koohl-Keet family.

Memory Lanes

The Lanes Were Open on Game Day

Photo & Text Copyright 2008 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

This popular blue collar neighborhood institution of 51 years closes at midnight tonight. The property will be developed into a multistory apartment building next year. Sunset Bowl seems always crowded and is a rare 24/7 mecca for family fun in rapidly gentrifying Ballard. When we moved to Seattle and the kids were looking for something to do late one night we ended up at the lanes. We've been back in the years since, but that first time there was a group of men in their 30s bowling next to us, all sorts of ethnicities in the group, all college grads and professionals who were in town for a long time friends' reunion. They had all bowled together here during their high school days and they all still kept in touch. Theirs is just one small story of all the special relationships that must have been formed here since 1957. Perhaps they and others would like a memento? All the equipment and furnishings will be auctioned on April 22 starting at 10 AM, with previews at 8 AM.

Happy Saturday everyone! The evening lights on the water at Elliott Bay looked so nice to me, I thought you might enjoy this color abstract. The sun has been out for two days now! So we enjoyed getting out and about yesterday and enjoyed a late dinner out on a wonderful evening. More rain is in the forecast, though. . . Hey, did anyone make it to the Dave Matthews - Tim Reynolds benefit concert last night at Key Arena? We want concert reports and set list!

This enormous old school building on 42nd at the heart of the Wallingford neighborhood's commercial corridor was recycled into new life some years ago as a home for popular restaurants and shops known as Wallingford Center. At the corner out front is a small plaza with black steel benches in a simi-circle. At the center rises a wonderful bronze sculptural totem by artist/resident Ron Petty, called Animal Storm, depicting all the types of animals that live in the neighborhood. Along with the wildlife you can find a dog with a peace symbol on its collar and Ron's cat serenely perched at the very top. Next month the weekly 3-7PM Wednesday farmer's market will open again on the opposite side of the building. Thanks to one of my readers for alerting me that Trophy Cupcakes, which resides inside WC, was recently featured on the Martha Stewart Show as one of the nation's best cupcake makers.

The Seeds of Compassion conference being held in Seattle over the next 5 days DOES still have space in all workshops being held this Sunday and Monday, and they are free. Some of them feature the most prominent university researchers in brain development and social-emotional development during the early childhood years and will be of particular interest to educators and parents. See the link in yesterday's post for details. There will be webcasts and TV broadcast of most of the conference's events.

This friendly miss, with her mum's permission, was kind enough to model her pink suede shoes withe the Velcro closures she can fasten herself. Her eyes, expression, and posture represent to me all that parents aspire to for their children. Although I observed her for only a few minutes as she interacted with her parent and a playmate, I got a very real sense that I was observing a well-loved child, one who faces the world and those in it with interest, trust and a quiet joy. Even at her very young age she was capable of inclusive play, bringing her friend over for me to enjoy photographing her shoes, as well.

Tomorrow the city of Seattle will begin hosting a huge and multifaceted 5 day conference called Seeds of Compassion, featuring the Dalai Lama and focusing on parents, educators, caregivers and community nurturing a healthy and compassionate disposition in children during early childhood. A veritable who's who of Seattle's researchers in neuroscience and social & emotional development will be joined by experts in the field from other states for two education sessions tomorrow. These panel discussions will be televised and webcast in 24 languages, and hosted by the Dalai Lama. There are no tickets or space left for any of this ambitious conference's events, classes, or sessions except for the Key Arena benefit concert by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tomorrow evening. From what I understand only the $1000 and up tix with backstage pass are available.

The mountain was out and visible through a bit of evening haze when I took this shot. Several elements echo the dome shape of the mountain: the white tops of the arches at Pacific Science Center and the curves of the stadium structures. As people wait for true spring weather, I've seen a lot of front garden projects going on during sun spot times between rain storms. Mainly tending plants and cleaning up from the winter, but some major landscaping, too. The colors and design of this completed yard caught my eye. Someone had a large budget for a landscape redo which included a custom metalwork gate (the scalloped top of which is peeking at you at the bottom of this photo), nice walkway pavers, giant glazed pots nearly as tall as me and short flagstone planters with plants of amazing color combinations (not in this shot), and custom tilework kicks on the front steps. What's going on in your garden just now?

Do you enjoy looking at houses? For some It is a regular Sunday pastime. I am a fan of many architectural styles, so when I was taking a walk and saw the front elevation of this residence from about a block away, I just said, "Wow!" (For other views, please click my More Seattle Stuff page here ) On seeing this photo, Pip, a kind Seattlite who had reacted as I had told me, "The people who built this are incredibly nice. I used to breakfast at Hi Spot [local cafe popular for great breakfasts] regularly, and we'd pass this every time on the way out for our Sunday drive. They were building it very slowly. We never saw a construction crew. So one day we decided to stop and look around. The owners were there, in their silver bullet streamline trailer nestled on the property. They were happy to show us around inside (it was then still bare bones). Turns out they were both architects [Bennett Lavacot Architecture] and they were using the left over goods from their contracts to slowly build this amazing house for themselves. They have an inside/outside fireplace in there! Truly an amazing piece of Seattle. I always pause to look when I drive by."

Someone's got some racket going on here. Well, actually it's just a rented water and sludge container at a construction site. But I WOULD like to rent out our gray skies and rain to someone who needs it this weekend, because, really, we don't! Two days of teaser sun and warmer breezes and its back to cold and wet. Consolation prize: since it will be a chilly and rainy weekend I won't feel so badly being indoors finishing up the taxes. Have a great Saturday everyone!

At the request of Bibi from A Yankee in Belgrade Daily Photo to see a gargoyle from the University of Washington campus, here is an image of one of the 28 grotesques that adorn Smith Hall on the Liberal Arts Quadrangle. People don't tend to notice them at cherry blossom time, but they are up there, looming. This one represents war as you might guess from the WWI style helmet, gas mask, and hand grenade. Many UW students lost their lives in WWI (you can see their names here). Dudley Pratt depicted many themes with these architectural ornaments in the late 1930s. You might remember this one that I featured last year.

If you are a Husky, you will recognize this emblem on Denny Hall, built in 1895, the first building erected on the University of Washington's campus. The university is thought to have one of the most beautiful campuses on the west coast. I enjoy seeing the interesting architectural details to be found in its building designs from many eras. Denny Hall will undergo an estimated 56 million dollar renovation being designed now and expected to take place from late 2009 and completed in September of 2011. This project is part of the the 10 year "restore the core" capital campaign. Please excuse the degraded image resolution I've been experiencing when resizing photos of late. Theme Day: Water

In the Midst of Mists

Photo & Text Copyright 2008 Seattle Daily Photo. All rights reserved, including reproduction or republishing.

Water envelops one half of this sculpture installation at a time. This father in Father and Son by Louise Bourgeois is in the midst of mists. Sometimes he is shrouded from view by high water, at others, as in the photo, it's his son that is hidden from view. On this particular day, there is even water above him in the clouds as well as water below. For an overview of the whole fountain which resides in Olympic Sculpture Park, click here and here.

Water flows around the globe today, and you can see just about every creative manifestation of it by visiting these City Daily Photo Blogs. Your journey through 178 cities begins here:
