Men's Back to School Fashion--Seattle Style

What the well dressed Frosh will be wearing on campus this year. . . Yes, Seattle's own Utilikilts are just the thing for frat parties or comfortable late night studies. Well, maybe mainly guys in art school or industrial education and technology classes--but I think they are gaining popularity with liberal arts types, as well. Prior to moving to Seattle, I'd only seen men in the US wear kilts to formal functions, such as black tie dinners and weddings. Here I've seen students, tradesmen, hikers, runners, and all kinds and ages of guys around Seattle wearing these casual kilts. They come in everything from goretex to leather. I even noticed a petite fashionista incorporating a black one of these into her very chic designer ensemble. See my More Seattle Stuff page for shots I took of the Interbay neighborhood store, which just closed and moved to the Pioneer Square neighborhood). Click this for a live model (a Seattle blogger who wears them). Remember, you saw them here first, folks. . .

Me, I couldn't help but to notice first how goodlooking legs he has! How unfair! And unhair..

Strange, really, I never could imagine men's skirts/utikilts would be such a trend in some place - and that the place could be Seattle. Thank you for that info, Kim... Definitely I saw it first here.

I remember freaking out when I saw a guy up in the U District with a heavy dark beard and macho plaid shirt on the top... only he was also wearing an elegant flowing ankle length dress and high heels on the bottom half.

I just pretended I didn't notice and walked past. That's usually the best way to deal with crazy people.

Kim, I must admit I find this fad amusing. I guess I can't take it too seriously. Perhaps if I lived in Scotland...

This was the first place I saw them alright. I certainly hope it's the last too! Wouldn't be wearing them down under.. the other guys would think you're a girl! And the crocs would have easier access too! Crickey! ( thanks and RIP Steve )

Well, I can see it will take a while for these to take hold in the provinces ;-). I must admit I was surprised a general equation of KILT = SKIRT = WOMEN's ATTIRE would be the general concensus, or associating the thought of these with crazy people in dresses. I mean, there are dozens of pics of Prince Chuck and lots of other UK men in the public eye wearing kilts. The novelty, I thought, was in the Utilikilts' non-traditional forms and manufacturing them for folks for whom this is not traditional attire. I wonder if similar comparisons would be brought up if these were dashikis, caftans, or other types of "pantless" men's clothing from other areas of the world?

Oh I love this, the shot and the kilt. I would so wear one. I always feel so confounded when I don't have enough pockets. I must admit that at first glance I thought this was a real person. —San Antonio DP

Men, you have no idea how comfortable these are. My only problem is how quickly I will be able to get another kilt.
