Were you/are you one of those kids whose parents had to confiscate your flashlight so that you would go to sleep and stop reading that great book that you just couldn't put down? Well here's a place where they'll leave the light on for you to read by in the dark. Seattle's Central Library which spans the block between 4th and 5th Avenues and Spring and Madison Streets glows in the night like a giant angular mantel on an old fashioned camp lantern.

I love it. But how energy efficient is it?
I do not imagine that it is even close to being energy efficient, but what a sight it must be when it's lighted on a dark night, especially.

This is quite an eye catching building, but I imagine that it is not energy efficient.

Wrong! It's a sustainably-designed building. It's energy use beats Seattle's tough codes by 10%!

Thanks Christie for posting the link about how energy efficient the Central Library building is. If there is one thing architects pride themselves on with project in Seattle it is efficiency and LEED standards. Seattle's contemporary buildings tend to try to meet or set the standard for "green" buildings, so it was interesting to see this topic come up. I usually post links, but since I'm away on holiday right now, just posting the shots is all I've got time for. So I appreciate Christie taking up the cause :-).

that is an interesting library glow. i would hate to live in the apartment directly looking at it though as you would never be able to get to sleep with black out shades.
I adore this building - cannot ever get to see enough of it. Your shot shows it at its best from the outside. (I try to encourage all my co-workers who are up there helping on the 787 to visit the library.)
How gorgeous and it does look like a giant lantern!
