Kurt in the Window

It's been 15 years since this 27 year old Seattle musician left the scene by his own hand. I passed this black and white poster of Nirvana band member Kurt Cobain displayed in the first floor apartment window of an Uptown building. He's staring at us from the other side. February 20th is Cobain's birthday, and 28 years ago today he received his first guitar as a birthday gift from his uncle. There will be remembrances and parties here in Seattle and even this one in Russia. Were you into the Seattle sounds of the 90s? My daughter was just a baby during that era but can play a cool version of Smells Like Teen Spirit on her guitar none the less.

I remember my kids being fans of Nirvana. That's about all I know, except I would recognize Curt Cobain's face. This is a good photo and appropriate post for today.

It's also the birthday of some other notable people - see my post today. A brief comment on the bunkum of astrology.

Nice! Nirvana was my favourite band at that time. I'll never forget when I first heard Smells like teen spirit on MTV. I also listened to a bunch of other Seattle bands, or at least I think they were. Pearl Jam, Green River, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the dog, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Alice in chains. The last band I actually saw live in Lund, Sweden when they were on tour.

Great shot, Kim! I was a big fan of the Seattle music scene back in the 90's. I grew up in the Midwest and listened to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, & Mudhoney. After watching the movie "Singles", which was filmed in Seattle and had members of Pearl Jam, AIC and Soundgarden in the movie, I just had to move to Seattle...and I did back in 1997. I have been here ever since and love Seattle! I still remember the first time I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and where I was when I heard the news Kurt Cobain had died. Thanks for the photo! It brings back a lot of good memories.

Now who wasn't a fan? Personally I preferred Nirvana unplugged but I still love them! Great photo, as usual!

I'm hopeless, I didn't recognise him. But I love your shot.

My favorite of last are your first cherry blossoms (I'll have to start to look for them here, haven't seen any), but most of all your doomed Methodist church (I loved the blurry treatment you gave it top and bottom, it works beautifully) and, absolute tops, your Valentine shot. FANTASTIC!

Should you have saved your Chihuly artwork shot for glass theme day on 1st of March? I'm sure you'll have some other fantastic photo to show. You're really very good, Kim!

Very cool post. I was past paying attention to new rock music at that point, but a friend got me started on listening to Pearl Jam & I loved them.

I can play only two songs on a guitar. One of them is Smells Like Teen Spirit. Thanks so much for the memories.

It is so cool how music travels (well at least bands do!) and is kind of a universal link. Seattle and Portland bands are still a VERY happening scene, and I wish you all could go to some of the live shows. Of course we get spoiled having so much music come through town, but so many artists live right here, like some of my faves, Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Dave of DMB, and Bill Frissel.
